Australian Cattle Dogs

Breed Profile

Country of Origin: Australia.

Size: Shoulder height: 46-51 cm(18 - 20 inches).

Coat: The outer layer is weather-resistant, short and somewhat rough. The inner layer is thick and short. Puppies are born all-white with coat coloring appearing a few weeks after birth.

Character: The Australian Cattle Dog is intelligent and willing to work. It is loyal and seldom barks. Tough, hard working dog who can cover immense distances. To his owner he is eternally loyal, gentle, alert and can easily be trained.

Temperament: If adequately socialized when young, this dog's behavior towards other dogs and children is ideal.

Care: Occasional grooming with a brush or comb is all that is required.

Training: Its intelligence makes training easy. It will be a problem if not kept occupied with tasks such as playing catch or chasing after Frisbees.

Activity: Lots of exercise and activity are required to keep this dog happy. If unable to commit to this, this may not be the breed for you. Without rigorous exercise, the Australian Cattle Dog is likely to become bored and destructive. For this reason, Australian Cattle Dogs are not recommended for a small household or apartment. They do best with a large yard and/or a job to do.

Should this breed have a tail?: Yes. The Australian Cattle Dog should have an intact tail. This dog uses its tail as a rudder when making sharp turns in work or play. It is a great disservice to the dog to dock a tail.
